The Hellboy movies are another one of our favorite series to watch. We have watched Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army many times over the years. They are visually stunning and a whole lot of fun. We’re really excited about the possibility of Hellboy 3. We want Hellboy 3!!! To show our support for Guillermo Del Toro’s quest to have Hellboy 3 make it to the big screen, we decided to dress up the pugs…Hellboy style.
The HellPugs costumes: Bono as Agent Hellbaby (Hellboy), Blue as Agent Blue Sapien (Abraham Sapien) and Roxy as Agent Roxy Sherman (Liz Sherman), were challenging but very enjoyable to create.
The hardest piece to figure out was Hellboy’s: The Right Hand of Doom. The piece that made it into the final photos is #4 of 4. We tried different mediums and sizing along the way. The tricky part was figuring out a way that Bono could wear the piece comfortably and naturally (human fists tuck backward, dog paws bend forward).
Our favorite pieces to work on were Abe’s respirator, goggles and Hellboy’s Big Baby gun because they were unlike anything we have done before and they’re cool. They were each like being given a hard 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzle to put together…fun, daunting, laborious… but satisfying in the end.
The biggest project in the series was the pillar with carvings. It literally was the biggest project that took a lot of material, layers of paint and time. The pillar stands at 4’ x 17” in diameter and has 54 glyphs. Thank goodness we didn’t have to make a human scaled one!
