Arwen’s coronation costume from The Return of the King consists of two pieces (not counting shoes). The gown and the crown will be very time consuming projects and we are looking forward to seeing the completed costume on Roxy. Roxy is excited about dressing up like a princess!
Gown: The gown has a simple elegance that we find very appealing. Because the color is so unique, finding fabrics and trims that are an exact match would be challenging, if not impossible. We tried our best to find pretty green fabrics and trims that could be heavily beaded in the neck and arm areas and yet soft and flowy. We hoped that the finished piece would be a gown that a princess would wear. We did not keep track of the hours of beading for the neck and sleeve areas but there are at least 24 grams of glass seed beads and 217 faux pearl beads that were added.
Crown: We have been studying the crown design for a while and have a good layout of the design. We had to do some modification of the design to accommodate Roxy’s pug ears and shape of her head. It took many hours of shaping individual pieces and then piecing it all together…then fitting it on Roxy and then reshaping again and again. After we got a good fit, we had to discreetly reinforce the crown in strategic places. We knew transforming a pug into a character like Arwen would be a challenge in itself but we really wanted to take on this project because we had never done anything quite like this before. We will have a 360 degree view of the crown (and other crowns/hats) posted in another blog entry in the near future.
