Out of the desire to do something that was entirely different for us, we created the Pugs of Summer series in August of 2012. A lot of the themes that we have done in costume have been sci-fi fantasy, faux fur accents, leather and dramatic lighting. This time around, we wanted beachy, silly, bright and colorful.
In April of 2012, we started brainstorming ideas. The idea of vintage swimsuits on our pugs is where we started. However, there were so many fun ideas that kept coming up that the series morphed into more than just vintage swimsuits.
Every photo shoot has its challenges and distractions and this one was no different. Here in Northern California, there are many foggy days on the beach. This is ideal if the dogs just want to run on the beach. We wanted sun for this photo shoot and we had to wait quite a while to capture the sun. In fact, it took a whole month (3 actual attempts: packing/schlepping costumes, pugs, photography gear etc. across the sand) before we finally got the sunny day we wanted. We were so excited to be actually shooting the series, but knew that the sun would limit how much time we had to shoot and create lighting challenges. Overall, it was a very memorable photo shoot and totally worth all of the effort…it came out exactly how we wanted it.
In September of 2014, our Pugs of Summer photo (featuring Captain Blue of the Pugtanic, Bathing Beauty Roxy and Beach Boy and Pug Guard Bono) was included in the book Pugs in Costume…a cute little book featuring a lot of adorable/funny photos of pugs in their costumes.
Stay tuned, we will be adding to the Pugs of Summer series when we can squeeze it in. New photos will be added to the Pug Toggery album in the portfolio section of our website.
